Anyone who is both an NFL fan and a Justin Timberlake fan will have had a field day last Sunday as it was announced that Justin would be bringing sexy back to the hottest sporting event of the year.
Yes, it’s true – Justin has finally been invited back to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show.
This has come 14 years after the infamous wardrobe malfunction that had millions of viewers gazing in utter shock.
As if you needed to refresh your memory on the incident:
Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson performed ‘Rock Your Body’ on the Super Bowl stage back in 2004. And if that wasn’t steamy enough, Timberlake tugging at Jackson’s dress exposing her right breast certainly was.
Both Timberlake and Jackson insisted that the move was supposed to reveal the red undergarment she was wearing underneath her black dress.
If anything, this incident managed to popularize the term “wardrobe malfunction” to the extent that it became a pretty ordinary part of our vocabulary.
It was quite the scandal back then and we were split on whether it had been planned as a publicity stunt or whether it was genuinely an innocent mistake.
Well, it seems that the organizers of the halftime show have forgiven the star for the supposed mishaps.
In fact, on Sunday evening, the NFL announced that Timberlake will headline the Super Bowl halftime show February 2018 in Minnesota.
This will actually be the ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’ singer’s third Super Bowl halftime performance.
If you cast your mind back to the 2001 Super Bowl, you may remember that he performed with NSYNC. He’s kind of a veteran now. In fact, no other artist has performed at the Super Bowl as many times as Timberlake.
Anyway, the the incident with Janet saw CBS being fined $550,000 by the Federal Communications Commission. Of course it was ultimately overturned, but the network was still in hot water over the whole fiasco.
Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon officially announced the news on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. In an undeniably funny skit, Timberlake and Fallon ask each other if they “have the time”, and Timberlake eventually reveals that he’s “doing the halftime.” Timberlake then confirmed the news on Twitter.
In an interview on Sunday Night Football
, Timberlake was asked a series of questions about the infamous incident.
Anyone who is hoping for yet another boob-related mishaps, well, sorry guys, that’s not on the cards this time.
won’t happen this time,” he insisted to NBC sports anchor Mike Tirico.
It’s actually not a huge surprise that the organizers of the show wanted Timberlake onboard considering he is a 10-time Grammy award-winning superstar.
Plus the performance is sure to be an entertaining one:
“What I really want to do is take the opportunity to put together a performance that feels like it unifies,” Timberlake continued. “I feel like that would be the ultimate accomplishment, and then the icing on the cake is at some point within that 12 minutes that everybody is shaking their booty.”
After news broke that Timberlake was going to be performing, Janet’s fans went crazy on Twitter because as of yet she
hasn’t been invited back by the NFL.
There was even talk that Janet Jackson had been banned from the Super Bowl.
I mean, it wouldn’t be too surprising if she was considering she had been banned from attending the Grammy Awards in 2004 directly after the Super Bowl incident! Ouch!
Wouldn’t be great if Janet made a surprise appearance in Justin’s performance? This time, I’d leave the puppies in though.
